1 NEWSLETTER Ms. Campbell Ms. Holt Ms. Harper Spelling / Vocabulary This week’s spelling and vocabulary words are from the Greek Root Words Workbook. Test Friday! Classic Classical Classification Classify Gratify Gratitude Gratuity Ungrateful Anchorage Public School Monday, March 11, 2013 Reading/Language/Writing Students will read a story in their National Geographic Reach for Reading series called “Dona Flor.” Key vocabulary include atmosphere, benefit, element, force, interact, landscape, material, modify, natural, and relate. Students will have centers this week. Math In math this week we will devote Monday to the comparing and ordering of decimals. Students will justify their comparisons with models and explanations. On Wednesday, students will work with a partner to complete a performance task assessment in the form of an extended response. On Thursday we will review what we have learned in this unit, and students will begin the test by completing the two short answer questions. Finally, on Friday students will have the opportunity to show their level of mastery by completing the multiple choice questions on the Decimal Unit Assessment. Good Luck Problem Solvers! Science Students will receive their graded test on “States of Matter.” We will go over it in class and then it will come home in their weekly folder. Please have students keep it in the science folder in their zipper binder. We will have a special presentation by one of our parents, Mr. Anderson, utilizing the matter and heat science standards. We will also differentiate between different types of energy. Science book pages 350-359 support our studies this week. Social Studies This week in social studies we’ll be discussing the definition of a region, and what makes a region. We’ll explore landforms, climate, resources, way of life in the Southeast Region. We will study the Mississippi River system and other waterways used for transportation of goods and people. Rotation #2 (10:20 – 11:15) will start Junior Achievement with Ms. Wise for the week of March 11 th – 16 th and the week of March 18 th Rotation #1 will begin Jr. Achievement with Lee Tatum. I still need a group leader for Rotation #3 (11:15 – 12:05) for Jr. Achievement. Materials and lesson plans are provided by the Junior Achievement home office. Upcoming Dates: 1.Wednesday, March 13 th First STEM club meeting 3:15-4:15. 2.March 15 th Trimester Report Sent Home 3.March 21 st Talent Show 4.March 25 th WWII Presenter Mr. Ed Harrell 9:00 a.m. 5.March 26 th “Be the Hero” Presentation 1:00-2:00 6.April 1-5 Spring Break ANCHORAGE VISION The Anchorage School Learning Community Launching Life Long Learning Through... Inspiration – Exploration – Connection Just a Reminder: 1.WWII Presenter Mr. Ed Harrell will be here on Monday, March 25 th to speak in the auditorium to 4-8 grade students at 9:00. Parents are invited to attend. A flyer for pre-sales on his book will go home with students this week. 2.Book orders are due back by Friday, March 15 th. 3.Camp Invention is coming to Anchorage this summer! Mark your calendars for the week of June 17 th. A flyer went home with your child last week. For additional information, please email Mrs. Harper. 4.Effective this week, I will no longer take reading logs on Monday morning if they are missing signatures from Friday’s due date. In the past if the students showed reading time that was logged, but were missing parent initials, I would take it on Monday for ten points off. All reading logs with 60 minutes logged and signatures are due on Friday for the remainder of the year. Thank you.
