PERSONAL HYGIENE The practice of cleanliness that promotes and maintains good health and well being

BODY ODOUR Chemicals in sweat Wastes excreted through the skin The actions of bacteria that live on the skin and feed on dead skin cells and sweat Unwashed clothes such as underwear and socks

HAND WASHING Most infections are caught when we put unwashed hands which have germs on them into our mouth. Hands and wrists should be thoroughly washed with clean soap and water, use a brush if your fingernails are dirty Dry your hands either with paper towels, hand towel or hot air dryers You should always wash you hands

BAD BREATH Good dental hygiene includes brushing and flossing your teeth reguarly Bad breath can be caused by diseases of the gums and teeth Some foods cause bad breath

SUGGESTIONS TO MANAGE ACNE

WASHING Cleaning the skin can help but even people with very clean skin can have problems with acne Try washing the affected area 2 – 3 times a day – don’t overdo it Too much washing can cause other skin problems such as dryness or irritation Try and keep hair clean and off the face and neck as oil from hair can make acne worse

DON’T SQUEEZE Picking and squeezing pimples can get germs onto the skin around the pimple and make it worse It can also lead to scarring

STRESS This can trigger an outbreak of pimples as it causes the release of chemicals into the brain that can make oil glands release more oil onto the skin This is why pimples magically seem to appear on stressful days

DIET Many people think that lollies or chocolate cause pimples Research has shown that there is not a strong link between diet and acne But some people find that this works for them so if you notice a link between your diet and skin avoid eating the product that triggers pimples

ACTIVITY In groups you are to design/invent a new wonder product – a hygiene product that does it all. You will need to include a slogan, description and come up with the most effective way to advertise your product. Develop the advertisement Present to the class, justifying why this product is essential to the health and wellbeing of an adolescent
