19/10/2015 EAS and RFID The need for Globalisation of Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and similar Applications 1GSC-9, Seoul SOURCE: ETSI TITLE: Globalisation of EAS and RFID Applications AGENDA ITEM: GRSC 6 CONTACT: Ian Brooker (ibrooker@tycoint.com) GSC9/GRSC_012a

GSC-9, Seoul Introduction EAS and RFID solutions consist of: an intelligent sensing/reading system transponders attached to –products –items –shipping containers –other assets… Frequencies depend on application requirements

GSC-9, Seoul EAS Global Market Installed Base –A million systems installed worldwide –1.5 billion hard tags, Growth Market 10 kHz100 kHz1 MHz 10 MHz 100 MHz1000 MHzDC AM 40–132 kHz EM 20 Hz–18 kHz Swept-RF 2–10 MHz HF 915 or 2450 MHz 0 100k 200k 300k 400k Systems Installed Major companies –in 90+ countries Annual Market –5000M disposable labels –$1000M Turnover Source IEASMA September 2000

GSC-9, Seoul RFID Global Market $898 MillionTotal Market in 2000  $898 Million 24% paGrowth Expectation  24% pa $2650 MillionExpected Size in 2005  $2650 Million Source Venture Development Corp. May 2001

GSC-9, Seoul Example: Product Tagging….. …….. “Cradle to Grave” Example global application –Place transponders into products at point of product manufacture –Same transponder remains throughout product life-cycle in whichever Countries it is consumed or used –Simple theft protection…. ….. or coded information for tracking “Cradle to Grave” information

GSC-9, Seoul Example: Supply Chain Security Transponders placed in products or shipping boxes/crates Tracked through the supply chain Shipment control and monitoring by interrogator systems at each transit point Automatic tracking to show product routing to reduce risk of terrorist activities –Across Countries and continents –Pilot projects already in motion

GSC-9, Seoul The Problem Transponders must be cost effective –It’s not cost effective to have multiple system transponders in the same unit –Usually not self powered - do not contain any internal power source Cross border systems required Without common Standards, Frequencies and Interrogator radio power levels… …Cross border applications will not happen

GSC-9, Seoul The Solution Need to look at the possibilities for globally harmonised requirements –Standards –Frequency bands –Interrogator/Reader RF levels Need to encourage harmonisation of requirements across the globe based on the identified possibilities
