#watitis2014 WHAT IS QUEST MOBILE? A new student interface to Quest that launched in mid-November, 2014 This new interface simplifies and modernizes existing functionality for usage on smartphones and tablets Android, Apple, and Blackberry-based mobile devices are supported

#watitis2014 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS? Students can easily perform core Quest functionality on personal mobile devices in a secure manner 47 pages have been mobilized, providing the ability to: view grades, class schedules add, drop, and swap classes view and update CEL exam center information search for classes view and update personal information upload citizenship documentation view program and advisor information register for a GO pass

#watitis2014 WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON STUDENTS? Students will automatically receive the mobile rendering using the existing Quest URL when accessing Quest on a mobile device A student’s Quest Mobile session will expire after 10 minutes of inactivity – to reduce the risk of unauthorized access on a lost or stolen device The Quest full site version will also be accessible via the “Full site” link on the Quest Mobile login page

#watitis2014 TIMELINE 6 ½ months from the initial and production installs (Apr 23 rd and Nov 13 th ) Activities included: Testing of the initial rendering Multiple integrated tests Executing the communication plan Soliciting student tester feedback Responding to feedback and retesting Staggered rollout – installed and accessible on the 13 th for student testers; accessible to all students on Nov 19 th Additional testing for upgrade and decustomization projects that went live on Dec. 1st

#watitis2014 TESTING Initial testing or “Fit/Gap” Comparison of desktop and mobile renderings to ensure all data elements were present Existing test scripts guided this effort Desktop Chrome browser used to emulate mobile devices All pages tested on cellphone and tablet form factors Result of initial testing: Test scripts were updated to reflect differences These updated scripts were used for integrated testing a complete test of all 47 pages Enhancement and fix requests to reduce/rearrange UI elements or to adjust formatting Scope expanded to include additional pages – like Citizenship Document Upload, GO Pass and the Advisor and Program pages

#watitis2014 STUDENT TESTERS A combination of 15 grad and undergrad students from across various faculties 1 week of directed testing Students were supplied with a test script to ensure all pages were covered Feedback was also collected

#watitis2014 STUDENT TESTER FEEDBACK Very simple, easy. Any student should be able to use it with ease. I like the black and gold. Can’t wait to start using this! Great! Much better than fighting with the desktop version of Quest on my phone. Easier to use than Learn Mobile.

#watitis2014 OUR RESPONSE

#watitis2014 STUDENT TESTER FEEDBACK Change ‘Go’ button to something more intuitive. Icons that are most important/most used should be at the top. Change GO to menu or navigate.

#watitis2014 OUR RESPONSE

#watitis2014 BEFORE AND AFTER FEEDBACK

#watitis2014 STUDENT TESTER FEEDBACK I think students will use this very often, especially if it becomes an app.

#watitis2014 OUR RESPONSE I used a mobile app once. It was awful!!

#watitis2014 LESSONS LEARNED Executing the communication plan requires a lot of coordination and preparation Key messages simplified communication and ensured a common message across campus Most of the implementation effort was about improving the usability of the mobile rendering Custom pages require more attention GreyHeller is very responsive to work with and has amazing UI engineers There is an unawareness of what is available in Quest Searching for a Monday class Future dated addresses Emergency contacts

#watitis2014 CHALLENGES Personal devices were used for testing Hard to find representative devices of various form factors and operating systems Campus WiFi is extremely poor in some administrative areas Navigation Waterloo’s customization impacted mobile testing Parallel Quest projects Bundle upgrade Decustomization of Student Center
