Outreach to Industry Home Industrial Partners ParticipantsEventsDocumentsLinksContacts ObjectivesNewsletter Enter your e-mail OK Join us Complete the form Semantic Web The next generation of the Web (the Semantic Web) is a huge information space, where machines can easily participate and help in a more meaningful way. There is, however, still a long way to go transfer the Semantic Web from an academic adventure into a technology provided by software industry. Supporting this transition process of Ontology technology from Academia to Industry is the main and major goal of Knowledge Web, the Network of Excellence under European Commission 6th FP. Outreach to Industry In particular, the Work Package Outreach to Industry focuses its efforts on promoting greater awareness and faster take- up of Semantic Web technology by industry. 12 Knowledge Web ©KnowledgeWeb – KnowledgeWeb O2I, Heraklio, 13-14 May 2004, Page 12 Industry Board MoU Basic principles –No interferences with current KW contract / Consortium Agreement (CA): just supplement to CA Knowledge Web Early Access Policy –The aim is to have a panel of industrial corporations, working as an informal group representative of a “laboratorial” target market where all can study industrial requirements, test the industrial value of their ideas and collect inspiration for new research opportunities. Setting-up and Accession –Any third parties may apply. The terms and conditions "Knowledge Web Early Access Policy" and the Application Form are to be available on-line. –Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VUA) will be authorised to sign with the Acceding third party on behalf of all contractors. Nonetheless, contractors have a two weeks term to express their opposition. Early Knowledge transfer –"Early Releases" ie. Results and deliverables from the KW technical committees, are to be made available to Panellists at the respective owners' discretion; preferably in the form of executable code or such other forms as do not give immediate access to confidential Knowledge. –Early Releases have to be treated as confidential by the Panellist, –The Panellists agree - To test the Early Releases diligently and to communicate to the Contractors sufficient progress and error reports, - To provide inputs such as but not limited to, recommendations, or industrial requirements, feedback to the Contractors in relation to its own use of the Semantic Web services & technology, O2I managers responsibility –ensuring timely achievement of the Panellists' tasks, –ensuring and organizing feedback and information for the benefit of all Contractors.

15 Knowledge Web ©KnowledgeWeb – KnowledgeWeb O2I, Heraklio, 13-14 May 2004, Page 15 Progress -This work package starts 1st of July- Task 1: Utility of ontology-based tools (Uni Trento) –A roadmap for achieving the goals of this task is established. –The main dependencies with other work packages are identified and discussed (specially benchmarking in WP2.1 and WP2.2). –An ad hoc meeting on “benchmarking in Kweb” will be organized with the other workpackages. Task 2: Interoperability of tools (L3S) –The general goals of this task were presented and discussed. –Identification of tool components and identification of requirements for interoperability is expected in next meeting. Task 3: Ontology content evaluation (UKARL) –The general goals of this task were discussed. –Yet no consensus about what “ontology evaluation” means. –A clear description of methods for ontology evaluation is expected in next meeting. –Consensus should be reached - in an offline mode- before the next meeting.

17 Knowledge Web ©KnowledgeWeb – KnowledgeWeb O2I, Heraklio, 13-14 May 2004, Page 17 Progress Task 1: Best Practices and Guidelines (FT) –A preliminary work and basic analyses of Best Practices. –A report is expected in the next meeting to capture the top best practices from the industry use cases –Ongoing work on best practices and guidelines for automatic metadata creation, with focus on industrial business cases. –Ongoing work on Best practices and guidelines for ontology-based recruitment application as prototypical business case. Task 2: Ontology Repository (UPM) & Task 3: Standards (UPM) –Identification of a subset of metadata for describing ontologies using the Reference Ontology. This set of metadata will be proposed for standardization. –Adapting and extending the OntoRoadMap as the first prototype of ontology repository, this repository will be part of the KWeb portal. Task 4: Ontology Outreach Authority (VUB) –Preliminary details on the goals and requirements of OOA. –A short report on the OOA goals and requirements will be presented in the next meeting and then it will be sent to the industry board for feedback. –Expected-Problem: Person-month allocated to this task is very optimistic. Decision: the decision is to be taken after finishing D1.3.3: reduce the goals or allocate more person-month.

Deliverable 3: Report on International Technology Show (UIKB) –First International Semantic Technology Road Show: ESWS’04, successfully held May 12th, in Crete!!! –The collection of applications and tools will be organized in a categorization matrix –The focus will be on applications rather than tools (is more industry related and avoids overlap with other activities) –The report will be related to the technology roadmap (D 1.4.1) Additional identified needs and suggestions: 1.Having links on the portal to the tools and applications 2.WIKI like portal for an application repository. Suggested features of such repository: user-driven, with a template for developers of the applications to complete. (Work out categorization matrix for the template) ranking system as in W3C WG BPD (See the JAVA portal (proposal from UPM))
