Year 10 GCSE PE A healthy, active lifestyle and your muscular system

Starter List the terms that go with this acronym F M C P F V W Fat Men Can’t Play Football Very Well Extension – Write some information about each one

Learning Objectives Do I know potential injuries to the muscular system? Do I know the effects of drugs, rest and diet on the muscular system?

Soft Tissue Injuries Bone is made of a hard material, therefore anything that is not bone is called soft tissue = muscles, ligaments and tendons

Soft Tissue Injuries Soft tissue injuries are common in sport Strained/torn/pulled muscles usually happen when a muscle is stretched beyond its limits and normally occurs where the tendon joins the muscle

Soft Tissue Injuries Another soft tissue injury is deep bruising which is a bruise of the muscle rather than the skin

Symptoms STRAINSDEEP BRUISING Pain Visible bruisingSwelling Limited range of movement

Treatment R I C E Watch the following video and complete ‘RICE’ including information about each stage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p5EEdeqphI

Treatment REST – take a break from the activity. A doctor, nurse or physiotherapist suggest how long you should rest based on the severity of the injury ICE – apply ice to the injured part (although not directly onto the skin) COMPRESSION – a bandage is wrapped around the injured part to reduce further swelling and to give support ELEVATION – lift the injured part. This reduces blood flow to the injury, reducing the amount of bruising

Treatment If the injuries resulted in time away from regular training, muscles would re-adapt to their new level of activity and the adaptations described above would begin to be lost When a muscle decreases in size it is called muscular atrophy

Exam Questions (i)What types of injuries are treated using R.I.C.E?.............................................................................................................................. (1) (ii)What do the letters R.I.C.E. stand for?.............................................................................................................................. (1) (Total 2 marks)

Exam Questions Trampolinists may receive soft tissue injuries as a result of taking part in their sport, (i)What is a soft tissue injury?.............................................................................................................................. (1) (ii)State two signs or symptoms of a soft tissue injury. 1.................................................................................................................................. 2............................................................................................................................... (1) (iii) How should a soft tissue injury be treated?............................................................................................................................. (1) (Total 4 marks)

Performance Enhancing Drugs Anabolic steroids allow the athlete to train harder so, as a result of the increased intensity of training, muscles will adapt and increase in size

Rest Rest is required for adaptations of training to take place, the muscular system needs time to recover before working hard again.

Diet Following a balance diet is very important for elite sports performer. Correct balance of protein is essential for growth and repair of muscle.

Plenary At the back of your books, write down two questions/topic you are still unsure of in this unit. Ask you study buddy for help answering this If they are unable to help, ask someone behind/in front of you

Homework Revision for end of unit test Muscle names Muscle movements – contracting/relaxing Isotonic/Isometric contractions Short and regular training effects Injuries PED/Rest/Diet effects
