Three Types ► All psychologists share an interest in behavior Some are primarily interested in research Some psychologists work in therapy groups (consulting) to help people Some psychologists teach psychology

Clinical Psychologists ► Largest group of Psychologists Help people with problems ► Anxiety, depression, relationships or major disorders as well as drug abuse and weight control. Evaluation of problems through interviews and tests ► Help to identify and understand problem / change ineffective or harmful behaviors

Clinical Psychologists ► Not to be confused with psychiatrists Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can describe medication

Counseling Psychologists ► Also use interviews and tests to identify problems Vastly different problems than what clinical psychologists deal with Family, career, or other relationship problems ► Friends, teachers, etc. Usually employed by businesses and schools

School Psychologists ► School psychologists help those who have problems that impede learning ► May administer tests (achievement based) ► Observe students in classroom and social settings ► Weigh in on student placement

Educational Psychologists ► Focus on course planning and instructional methods for a whole school system How are students affected by: ► Psychological factors ► Cultural factors ► Economic factors ► Instructional methods ► Some help prepare standardized tests SAT’s

Developmental Psychologists ► Changes to the human condition(s) Physical Emotional Cognitive Social ► Interest in adolescent development Extraordinary Field

Personality Psychologists ► Interest in trait development and gender roles in society Do gender roles exist?

Social Psychologists ► The behavior of people in social settings Differences and attractions of men and women Conform to group attitudes (standards and expectations) Behavior in groups Prejudice and discrimination between groups Act aggressively or help others

Experimental Psychologists ► Basic Research – Research done with no immediate application i.e. – ► Motivational factors in dieting ► Memory and learning in classroom settings

Other Specialists ► Industrial and Organizational Psychologists Focus on people and work ► May be involved in hiring, promotions, demotions, placements, etc. ► Environmental Psychologists How people influence and are influenced by their environment ► How does where you live affect your life?

Other Specialists ► Consumer Psychologists Behavior of shoppers ► Placement of items in stores ► Forensic Psychologists Work within the criminal justice system ► Health Psychologists Help people adopt healthy behavior Examine how behavior and mental processes are related to health
