What is a Psychologist Psychologist- scientist trained to observe, analyze and evaluate behavior Psychiatrist- a medical doctor that deals with mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders – Can prescribe medication Clinical psychologist- diagnoses and treats people with emotional disturbances – Help people deal with personal problems – Work in private offices, mental hospitals, prisons – ½ of all psychologists Counseling psychologists- helps people deal with everyday living – Many people might not have a mental disorder, but trouble coping

What is a Psychologist cont. Developmental Psychologist- studies physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes that occur throughout life – Study children, elderly, process of dying Educational psychologist- deal with teaching topics – Intelligence, memory, motivation Industrial/organizational psychologists- study methods to boost production, improve working conditions, train people, reduce accidents

Community Psychologist- may work in a mental health or social welfare agency Experimental psychologist- studies sensation, perception, learning, motivation, and emotion in controlled lab conditions Where do Psychologists Work?
