Simple Subject/Simple Predicate  First we need: _______________________  Next we need a sentence: John ran to the store.  Now we need to put simple subject on the line: John  The Simple Predicate comes next:  John ran  Separate the simple subject from the simple predicate by a line that is drawn vertical between John and ran. Predicate Noun/Adjective  Again: A Line: ____________________  Next we need a sentence: The boy who told the story was Scott.  Now we need to put simple subject on the line: boy  The simple predicate next: boy was  Separate the simple subject from simple predicate by a vertical line that extends below the original line  Like this: boy |was  Stay on that line and add your predicate noun  Like this: boy |was Scott  Add a slanted line between the linking verb and predicate noun  Like this: boy | was \ Scott

6. Now try Predicate Adjective  Very same as Predicate Noun  Sentence: The country is very patriotic on the Fourth of July.  Country | is \ patriotic  Try these  1. My mother was angry because I broke the vase.  2. The dog is a hero for saving the baby.  3. The fireman received the reward.

7. Time for Direct/Indirect Objects  It always starts with a line: ______________  Next simple subject/simple predicate  Direct object: on the line, AFTER the verb. Separate the verb from the direct object by a vertical line that DOES NOT EXTEND BELOW THE ORIGINAL LINE.  Example: I gave the newspaper to the student.  I | gave | newspaper  Example: I painted the wall a bright red color.  I | painted | wall

8. Now the Indirect Object  Remember: you can NOT have an indirect object without a direct object. An indirect object will come before the direct object.  The indirect object is placed on a line BELOW AND TO THE RIGHT OF THE VERB AND THEN IS JOINED TO THE VERB WITH A SLANTED LINE.  LIKE THIS: The computer gives you an answer.  Computer | gives | answer  \you
