Americans Become Consumers
Industrialization and Urbanization changed the lives of American workers People began to work for wages rather than for themselves on farms. This led to ___________________, where people wanted and bought the many new products on the market.

Advertising Attracts new Customers
Because of newspaper ads, for the first time, people starting buying name-brand products Also, department stores began to develop, offering high quality items at lower prices.

Some Achieve Higher Standards of Living
After the Civil War, people starting associating success with how much you could buy. The end of the nineteenth century was known as the Victorian Era, after the queen of England. People wanted the nicer things in life!

Mass Culture All products began to look alike, causing Americans to become more alike.

Newspapers Circulate Far and Wide
Joseph Pulitzer started a morning paper called the World. He also published the Evening World. William Randolph Hearst published the Morning Journal. Both papers were filled with political corruption, comics, sports and illustrations.

Education Newspapers and literature flourished because now Americans can read. Public schools developed rapidly, teaching American children to be good citizens and the basic subjects. Schools for African Americans developed as well since they didn’t have access to the white schools.

City Dwellers Escape to Amusement Parks
Amusement parks, like Coney Island in NYC, began to develop for entertainment.

Outdoor Events Drew Audiences
“Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show” attracted many people. Also, summer camps developed for different churches.

New Entertainment in the Cities
Performance theater was a fast-growing trend. Vaudevilles and variety shows

Spectator Sports Attract Fans
Baseball, bicycle racing, boxing and football came popular.
