4 Introducing... The Leader in Me Video Link We will begin to implement The Leader in Me based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People ® by Stephen Covey. This will help to: develop a culture of student leadership build 21 st Century skills inspire student greatness

5 The Common Core State Standards were developed to prepare students with essential 21 st Century Skills needed to be “College and Career-Ready” Introducing... The Common Core Standards Rigorous concepts will be introduced to develop critical thinkers in grades K-12! The AIMS exam will be replaced with the PARCC exam beginning in Spring 2015

8 Time: 8:00 – 9:30 Our math program is called Investigations Math. The goal of this program is to develop students who understand math concepts and are efficient and flexible when solving problems. Students must learn their multiplication and division facts this year thru 12s. [Goal = 100 in 5 min.]

9 Time: 8:00 – 9:30 Changing Instruction with... The Common Core Standards Change in the definition of mathematics: from procedures to conceptual understanding Change in the vision of a classroom and teaching: from transmission to fostering development Change in perceived goals: from algorithms to a repertoire of strategies for computation Change in how parents can help their children: from homework as practice and checking answers to a focus on reasoning

10 Time: 9:40 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Our goal is to develop reading fluency, reading comprehension and written reading response. Reading materials include: stories from our textbook, Harcourt Trophies; book sets; and nonfiction passages. Instruction in whole group, guided reading & instructional focus groups

11 Time: 1:45-2:30 Based on the Six Traits of Writing Thinking Maps The Writing Process: Brainstorm/Prewrite, Draft, Revise, Edit, & Publish Forms: Opinions/Arguments, Narratives, Creative Stories, Friendly Letters, Expository Essays, Response to Literature; Poetry

14 Weekly Star Homework: - The goal is for each child to finish 12 activities by the end of the week

15 Must choose a different activity for each night practiced throughout the week Staple to the “STAR Homework” slip

16 At this time, we’re planning our field trip destinations. The cost of these activities this year will range from $25.00-$35.00 per student including transportation. As extracurricular activities, our funding for field trips is extremely limited. Our ability to continue to provide such experiences for students is dependent on donations from our community.
