Finding Books Books Can be Found GIL, the Library Catalog. This is the database of books, journals, maps and other documents the Library owns. Use Exact Search if you have specific information such as the title, call number, author, etc. Use Keyword Search to combine and/or eliminate terms, as well as search specific fields of a record in the catalog. Use Quick Search only for extremely distinctive keywords.

Finding Journal Articles From the Libraries Home page (http://www.libs.uga.edu/) Click on GALILEO Databases.http://www.libs.uga.edu/ Databases are arranged alphabetically and by subject. Recommended subject databases are highlighted by the “Try These First” arrow. Multidisciplinary databases Academic Search Premier and Research Library are good starting points for most subjects. To get the GALILEO password off-campus, go to GIL.

Academic Search Premier Select Academic Search Premier from the menu. Go to the Advanced search screen to combine/eliminate terms. The “Peer reviewed scholarly publications” will retrieve articles from scholarly publications only. Note: The “Full Text” box option retrieves only articles that can be retrieved electronically from ASP.

Finding Newspaper Articles using LexisNexis Academic Navigate to LexisNexis Academic from the Galileo menu or type Lexis in the search box. Use the “Guided News Search” to find older newspaper articles on a specific topic. For most topic searches, select “General News” in the 1 st drop-down box and “Major Papers” in the 2 nd drop- down box. Specific publications can also be searched exclusively by selecting “Sources” from the bar at the top of the screen or by typing the title in the “Search this publication title” field.

Locating older periodical articles using the Readers’ Guide You will need to use the Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature to locate articles not indexed in On-Line databases (typically before the mid 1980’s.) Found in 1 st Floor Main Reference (AI3.R286) Locate articles by subject. Note the title, date, volume, issue number and pages of the article. Find the title of the journal or magazine in GIL and locate the print copy on the shelves.
