1 Welcome! “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” –Nursery Rhyme first recorded in the 1800s Explain why you agree or disagree with this saying, providing support for your answer. THEN determine what message this is sending to children (it is a nursery rhyme). Do you think it is a positive message to send to young children? Why or why not?

2 A Note Before the Poem  This poem is by Shane Koyczan.  It can have a rather strong emotional effect. Because of this, for 10 minutes after the poem, I am going to ask you NOT to speak. I will put up a prompt for you to work on in your journal.  The following discussion should be respectful, sensitive, and serious.
