Regarding Marriage

31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

1. Life goes wrong when you make the symbol the ultimate.  Marriage is not ultimate it is a sign or shadow of a higher reality.  Christ is the source of all love and joy.  The church is the ultimate, eternal family.  Matthew 22:30  Matthew 12 : 48 & 49  Luke 11 : 26,27 "Marriage is temporary and it will finally give way to the relationship to which it was pointing all along... To Christ in the church" (John Piper)

2. Life goes wrong when your happiness and self-worth are dependent on being loved romantically.  It is possible for a lonely insecure, unhappy single person to become a lonely insecure, unhappy married person.  Problems and issues like loneliness, insecurity and unhappiness are not cured by another human companionship.... They are cured by the love of Christ.  " marriage doesn't solve emptiness... It exposes it, If someone can’t live without you, he or she will never be happy living with you" (Gary Thomas)

3. Life goes wrong when you make marriage the measure of a significant life.  The ultimate family is not biological it is ecclesiological, it is not produced by procreation but by regeneration.

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!

26 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.” 27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”
