Greek Heroes What makes an epic hero?

What do you think? What does the word HERO mean to you? Is killing someone heroic? Why or why not? Do heroes have to be moral role models in all areas of life?

Heroic Qualities Extraordinary birth (usually divine parentage) – A god and a royal as parents—A demi-god – Accomplishes an amazing feat at a young age Issue of god-like qualities vs. human mortality – Do not “fit” A role model: – Strength, endurance, speed – Role as a rescuer, doer of impossible deeds, courage, sacrifice, determination, loyalty – Sometimes as a savior and sometimes a threat

A need for glory vs. need of human relationships – Including admiration, rewards, fame – Hero unsure of his status as “man” – Desire for Kleos (Greek: κλέος) the Greek word often translated to "renown", or "glory“ (to hear). “What others hear about you". A Greek hero earns kleos through accomplishing great deeds, often through his own death. – Desire for aristeia or aristia (Greek: ἀριστεία, "excellence") where a hero in battle has his finest moments (aristos = "best"). An aristeia can result in the death of the hero at the aristeia's end.

The hero is tested to prove the worth of himself and his quest through many obstacles: – Symbolic Journey Dragons and monsters represent the concerns of the subconscious Journey to the underworld represents of the need to confront death and mortality – The presence of mythical beings, magical and helpful animals, and human helpers and companions

Involvement of gods in the quest—Zeus, Hera, Athena, Hermes – Gifts and special favors are often bestowed on the hero The quest may reach a low point where the hero nearly gives up his quest or appears defeated Often there is a resurrection: the hero overcomes obstacles and perseveres The hero may or may not die in order to fulfill his/her destiny or fate.

Gender role of hero: Marriage to a queen or princess—brings turmoil and unhappiness The hero's need to reject, tame, or kill women, or else they will tame and effectively “kill” the hero by means of domestic obscurity In direct conflict with his desire for fame and his need to accomplish extraordinary deeds.

Do you know any heroes today? Based on these guidelines, do you know of any heroes that fit the description? Think about other texts that you’ve read. What qualities do today’s heroes have? List and describe at least ONE hero in today’s world and why they qualify. Be specific!
