What is an educational research project? 2 Research in a teaching or learning topic with the goal of improving the quality of instruction or student learning Research MUST involve a hypothesis or research question Results must be measurable

Suggested Areas of Focus 3 Increase student retention, persistence and graduation rates Improve access for specific groups of students Enhance student professional development Develop assessment methods that improve instruction or learning Increase faculty-student interaction Promote active learning Improve attainment of learning outcomes NOTE: The focus is not the same as an educational research question!

Award Amounts 4 Individual awards generally average $1,000-$5,000 Team projects can be awarded up to $8,000 Can be used for summer support, GTA support, materials/equipment, publishing, etc.

Requirements 5 PI must be full-time faculty, department head or full-time staff with teaching duties Proposal of up to 5 pages, including signature of department chair or program head

Requirements (cont.) 6 Informal presentation after first semester of research to CERTI committee Conference presentation at Teaching and Learning Technology Conference in March during second semester of research Final written report at end of third semester (December 2016)

Timeline 7 March 30, 2015 – Letter of intent due to CERTI office (can be an email) April 24, 2015 – Full proposal with signatures due to CERTI office May 22, 2015 – Awards announced May 29, 2015 – First half of funding released Second half of funding released after TLT Conference presentation (March 2016) Dec. 30, 2016 -- Final report due to CERTI office

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Fellows 8 After grant requirements are met, recipients are then designated as CERTI SoTL Fellows Can apply for up to $1,000 in travel funding to present their educational research at other venues

Issues 10 Not having a clear research question (simply making a change to the course does not make it an educational research project) Scope of project being too broad Not specifying how you will measure results
