Utilizing your notes and past knowledge answer the following questions: 1) What manual is developed by the manufacturer and also can be designated as an FAA-approved flight manual? 2) Identify the typical nine sections of a POH? 3) What two documents must be carried in the aircraft at all times? 4) What is the document that lists the bare minimum equipment/systems that an aircraft can still legally fly and be safe? 5) Describe the aircraft logbook entry that must be listed when maintenance is performed. Warm-Up – 4/10 – 10 minutes

Pilots Operating Handbook The POH is a document developed by the aircraft manufacturer and contains FAA approved Airplane Flight Manuals (AFM) information. The POH for most light aircraft built after 1975 is also designated as the FAA-approved flight manual.

Pilots Operating Handbook / Airplane Flight Manual The typical AFM/POH contains the following nine sections: General; Limitations; Emergency Procedures; Normal Procedures; Performance; Weight and Balance/Equipment List; Systems Description; Handling, Service, and Maintenance; Supplements.

Aircraft Documents Certificate of Aircraft Registration Before an aircraft can be flown legally, it must be registered with the FAA Aircraft Registry. The Certificate of Aircraft Registration, which is issued to the owner as evidence of the registration, must be carried in the aircraft at all times.

Airworthiness Certificate The Airworthiness Certificate must be displayed in the aircraft so it is legible to the passengers and crew whenever it is operated. The Airworthiness Certificate is transferred with the aircraft except when it is sold to a foreign purchaser.

Minimum Equipment Lists (MEL) When the FAA adopted the minimum equipment list (MEL) concept for 14 CFR part 91 operations, this allowed operations with inoperative equipment determined to be nonessential for safe flight.

Maintenance Entries The entry must include: 1. A description of the work, such as “changed oil (Shell Aero-50) at 2,345 hours.” 2. The date of completion of the work performed. 3. The entry of the pilot’s name, signature, certificate number, and type of certificate held.

 April 10 1837 — The earliest known aeronautical experiment in Canada is conducted by Canadian schoolteacher John Rae. He successfully launches a paper balloon able to carry weight. Its lift is provided by the heating of its blackened surface by the sun. THIS DAY IN AVIATION

 April 10 to May 10 1919 — Remarkable records were made by the Victory Loan Flying Circus. The circus, composed of three flights, each flight consisting of 15 pilots and many types of airplanes, tours the United States. Performances were given in 88 cities and 45 states. A total of 1,275 flights were made, 368 civilians were taken as passengers and 19,124 miles were flown. THIS DAY IN AVIATION

 April 10 1926 — Lindberg becomes chief pilot for Robertson Aircraft Corp, flying a Saint Louis to Chicago mail route. THIS DAY IN AVIATION

Chapter 9 – Weight and Balance FAA – Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge

 Mission:  Describe the importance of weight and balance on an aircraft.  Describe what role center of gravity can have on safe flight.  EQ: Describe the importance of Aeronautical Knowledge for the student pilot learning to fly. Today’s Mission Requirements

Introduction Weight and balance is significant for safe flight The three Axis of flight converge on the center of gravity. The location of center of gravity can greatly effect safe for flight operations.

Chapter Summary The goal of every pilot is a safe flight; center of gravity and the importance to properly balance an aircraft can mean the difference between life and death.
