Francisco Goya: Lived: 1746-1828 Spanish Artist The most important Spanish artist of the late 1800s and the early 1900s. At age 14 he started learning under Jose Martinez in Spain. In 1793 he became deaf… and cute. Michael Rice, Noah Brown, Mason

ARTISTIC STYLE Francisco Goya was a Romantic painter (An artist from the Romanticism. Influenced by Francisco Bayeu, his artwork is sometimes seen as erratic or unpredictable ranging from historical pieces, portraits, and grotesque representations of the human soul and it’s relation to torment. Used his artistic talent to represent political and social issues.

HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE Began in Germany and had no direct national boundaries since it spread so quick. The idea of Romanticism is that reason cannot explain everything. In reaction to the Enlightenment, Romantics searched for subconscious reasoning and idealized the middle ages. During this time Spain was invaded by Napoleon’s French army and Goya depicted the Spanish uprising in the Third of May.

FAMILY OF CHARLES 4TH An oil on canvas painting created in 1800. It features life sized figures of Charles IV and his family. Him and his family were dressed in fine clothes and jewelry and the painting was modeled after Velazquez’s Las Meninas which was the setting of royalty in a natural setting.

SLEEP OF REASON CAUSES NIGHTMARES This piece depicted a man asleep while writing. We see a man sleeping peacefully as bats and owls surround him. Goya forces the viewer to become a part of the painting making the viewer feel like the monsters also threaten them.

THIRD OF MAY We see the Spanish uprising when Napoleon’s French army stormed into Spain. The scenes of drama and tension are created by the use of light. The light strongly illuminates the heroes. This piece was used as a decorative art for the return of Fernando VII to Madrid
