Common Words Special Meanings The Bible uses ordinary words is special ways.

Koine Greek ● Two levels of Greek – ● Classical (high Greek, legal and philosophers) ● Koine – Common, language of the common man ● Jesus and apostles spoke Koine Greek ● New Testament was written in Koine Greek ● Mark 12:37b And the common people heard Him gladly.

1 Timothy 6:3-5 ● 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.

Elder ● Common word ● Older, mature adult ● To render aid, to help ● 1 Timothy 5:1 Do not rebuke an older man, (elder - KJV) but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers ● Special meaning ● Office of leadership in the church ● Titus 1:5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you

Confession ● Common word ● Admit, agree ● To agree with accusation ● John 1:20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." ● Special meaning ● Agree with God ● Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Break Bread ● Common word ● Eat a meal ● Acts 2:46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart ● Special meaning ● Memorial of Jesus ● Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.

Common Words Special Meanings ● As you study the Bible you must remember that many words and terms are given a special emphasis and meaning in the spiritual realm ● We must be careful that we don't try to remove these special meanings that God gave to these words
