Synonym A word that means the same as another word. Ex: cold and chilly

Antonym A word that means the opposite of another word. Ex: hot and cold

Prefix A letter or group of letters that comes at the beginning of a word that changes the meaning of the word it is added to. Ex: re + use = reuse

Suffix A letter or group of letters added to the end of the word that changes the meaning of the word it is added to. Ex: use + ful = useful

Homonym Two or more words spelled and pronounced alike but have different meanings. Ex: bear – the animal bear – to put up with

Homophone Two or more words pronounced alike but different in meaning and in spelling. Ex: two, to, and too

Fictional Something told or written that in not fact, a made up story.

Non-fictional Something told or written that is factual.

Poem A piece of writing often having a rhyme or rhythm which tells a story or describes a feeling.

Simile A figure of speech comparing two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”. Ex: Her cheeks are as read as roses.

Metaphor A figure of speech comparing two unlike things without using the word “like” or “as” Ex: Their cheeks were roses.
