THE BILL OF RIGHTS 1. Is the first 10 amendments to the Constitution.
2. Were added 2 years after the “new” government was started. (Became part of the Constitution in 1791.

What is your Bill of Right? What freedoms does is protect? What court cases have challenged it? When/Why did it develop?

GUARANTEEING OTHER RIGHTS
A. Extending Civil Rights 1. Civil Rights - rights guaranteed to all U.S. Citizens. 2. Thirteenth Amendment - outlawed slavery. 3. Fourteenth amendment, ratified in 1868, was intended to protect the rights of African Americans. a. Protects individuals from unfair actions by state governments.

B. Extending Voting Rights
1. Suffrage - the right to vote. a. Was originally left to the states. 2. Fifteenth Amendment gave African Americans the right to vote. 3. Seventeenth amendment allowed voters in a state to choose the state’s Senators. (Were chosen by state legislatures.) 4. Nineteenth Amendment gave women the right to vote. (1920)

a. Wyoming was the first state to give
women the right to vote in 1869. 5. Twenty-third amendment, ratified in 1961, gave residents of D.C. the right to vote. 6. Twenty-fourth Amendment forbade poll taxes. (1966) a. Poll tax - tax charged on people in order to vote. 7. Twenty-sixth Amendment lowered the voting age to 18. (1971)

CITIZENS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Duties of Citizenship 1. Obey laws 2. Attend school 3. Pay taxes 4. Serve in the Armed Forces 5. Appear in Court (serve on jury duty.)

B. Responsibilities of Citizenship
1. Voting a. Each vote counts 2. Being Informed a. Learn the issues and how candidates feel on issues. b. What is most important to you? 3. Take Part in Government a. Become a member of a political party or serve as a government official.

4. Helping in your Community
a. Respect others b. Don’t litter 5. Respecting and Protecting Others Rights BE A RESPONSIBLE/CARING CITIZEN!!
