E-mail – don’t forward every “cute” story On-line chat- see how others “chat” and know the lingo before jumping in Social networking- belittling, judging, slandering, or gossiping…..it will get back to them….. and to you Other thoughts…... 4 Understanding Copyright and Fair Use Laws What is copyright? The legal rights a person has over their original ideas, Someone’s work cannot be copied through writing, a dramatic work, audio recording, etc. The author does not have to have a copyright notice or be registered to be copyrighted. What is Fair Use? You can use some published work without getting the author’s permission. This is why we cite our work. 5 Is This Plagiarism? “to kidnap” Using others work or intellectual property is actually stealing. This is considered public dishonesty. Always give credit for words and works where credit is due. When in doubt cite the work Plagiarism can result in fines, expulsion from school, job loss, failure of a class, or punishable by state and local laws What is considered plagiarism? 1. claiming that someone else’s work is your own 2. copying words or ideas without citing 3. not using quotation marks when necessary 4. using too many of some one else’s words Reference an APA manual to understand how to properly cite a source. 7 Keeping Your Computer Safe Use anti-virus software- finds and deletes viruses and repairs damaged files Don’t open junk email- email addresses that do not show the email address in the “to” box are often spam Install a firewall- most computers already have a firewall installed, it just needs to be turned on.
