2. Biography Born on March 26, 1911, in Columbus Mississippi. Real name is Thomas Lanier Williams. He moved to Missouri, where his carefree childhood ended. He became introverted and began to write. In 1929, Williams enrolled at the University of Missouri, but was withdrawn by his dad because Williams girlfriend was attending the same university. When he was 28 he changed his name to Tennessee because his father was from there

3. How His Life Affected His Work His childhood was often tense because of an extremely strained marriage between his parents. After being withdrawn from school, Williams suffered from depression. In the 1960s his work received bad reviews and as a coping mechanism, Williams turned to drugs and alcohol. In 1969 he was hospitalized by his brother. He never fully recovered. His life was fueled by pills and drinking. He died in a NY hotel room on February 25, 1983.

4. My Focus Theme: How society reveals the selfishness of man as he ostracizes and manipulates the weak or different. Aspects: Alcohol/substance abuse, relationships, lying, and sexuality. Results in mistreatment and tragedy.

6. A Streetcar Named Destiny Playwright Blanche DuBoisa schoolteacher who goes to live with her sister, Stella, and her husband Stanley because she is broke. The book is about her experience living with them. Her personal issues lead to mistreatment and she is committed to a hospital at the end. Earned a Drama Critics' Award and his first Pulitzer Prize.

7. Alcohol/substance abuse: Blanche has a drinking issue to help cope with depression. Relationships: Blanche is ostracized for not being “chaste” and being too sexual. Also, Stanley rapes her. Lying: Blanche lies about her past and her drinking issue. Sexuality: Blanche’s husband committed suicide after she discovered his sexual preferences for men. All of this results in Stanley manipulating Stella to have her sister committed to an insane asylum.

8. A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Playwright Big Daddy is an estate owner who is dying of cancer. His children are fighting to cut each other out of the inheritance. The book is about the family relationships.

9. Alcohol/substance abuse: Brick is an alcoholic and is using it to deal with his friend Skipper’s death. Relationships: Brick hates Maggie (his wife). She continuously tries to seduce him in an attempt to conceive a child and cement her spot in the family. Lying: Maggie lies and says she’s pregnant Sexuality: Brick was in love with his friend Skipper.

10. The Night of the Iguana It begins with Reverend Shannon having a breakdown after being kicked out of the church for having an inappropriate relationship with a young girl. Then the books is years later when Shannon is caught in another situation with a young girl. In an attempt to save his job as a bus driver, he strands everyone at a motel.

11. Alcohol/Substance abuse: Shannon is an alcoholic after being kicked out. Relationships: Shannon struggles with his sexual desires. Hannah struggles with opening up. Lying: Shannon lies about his desires and past. Sexuality: Shannon having sex with young women/ trying to control himself.

12. The Glass Menagerie Play About the Wingfields Family. Tom Wingfield doesn’t like working and instead wants to write poetry. Amanda (mom) attempts to make Laura, her daughter, more popular. Laura is extremely shy and has a brace on her leg. She is constantly concerned about not fitting into society. The play is concerned with Amanda’s attempt to get Laura married. The story is a reflection from Tom’s memory.

13. Relationships: Mr. Wingfield left the family. Laura’s attempt at finding a suitor. Her relationship with Jim (who she discovers is engaged). Lying: Laura claims that Tom lied about Jim being single. Tom lies about paying bills as he secretly saves enough money to leave. Sexuality: Laura is too timid to be open in her pursuit for a man. Play ends with disappointment everywhere.
