3. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce you to the game of golf. We will begin with a brief history followed by skills and concepts of the game. We will also cover some of the basic rules and lastly, go over some terminology.

4. History of Golf Historians do not agree on the exact origins of the game, but most believe it originated in Scotland over 500 years ago. The name is thought to have come from the Dutch word KOLF, which means club.

5. Play the ball from a teeing area to a hole, a prescribed distance from the tee, in the fewest strokes possible. An official round is 18 holes. Purpose of the game

6. The Course From the tee, the golfer will hit to an area called the fairway, then to the green where the hole is located. The areas to the right/left of the fairway is called the rough. Most courses contain obstacles in the rough such as – sand traps, bunkers, water hazards, out-of- bounds and trees.

7. Scoring The par designation is the number of strokes that an expert would take to play the hole. It usually takes 2 hits to get to the green and 2 to putt the ball in the hole. A score of 1 under par is birdie, 2 under is an eagle, 3 under on a par 5 is a double eagle, 2 under on a par 3 is a golfer’s dream – hole in one!

8. Clubs A set of clubs Includes woods, irons and putters. (2 – 4 – 2 ) 3, 5, 7 and 9 irons are recommended Cost - $75 – to several $100 Choose a club that you can control. Consider swing weight and size

Chipping Considered a low flying maximum roll shot CUES: Grip – interlocking, overlapping, 10 Stance – narrow / slightly opened or squared, hands, head and weight in front of ball Motion – keep lower body movement to a minimum, especially on backswing Follow-through – swing depends on distance, finish at knee, waist or full

10. Putting There are many different putting techniques for the short shot. Grip – finger overlaps Stance – puts eyes over ball, crouch over ball with bent elbows Motion – initiated with arms, little wrist movement Follow-through – same as backswing

11. Safety Listen to signals & follow directions, listen for “fore!” Look before you swing & stay in your safety space Never play in thunderstorms No horseplay or practice swings Look before you swing and never swing more than ¼ Keep hands dry

12. Etiquette Be quiet, know the rules and play without delay, lowest score tees up No practice shots during play Abstain from loud talk, profanity, moving around or throwing clubs Player farthest from hole plays first, be ready, clean traps, replace divots Never play until previous group is out of range.

13. Summary of Rules Intentional swings are counted A ball is considered lost if not found in 5 minutes A ball must be played as it lies, natural impediments can be moved Out of bounds or water equals 1 penalty stroke A ball hitting another ball on the green equals 2 stroke penalty
