3 AIM OF THE COURSE

4 To provide students with a clear understanding on how global business operates. Some answers will be provided to questions such as:  Why companies go global ?  Which are the strategies that are applied in the global context?  How are the relationships between HQ and subs formed?  How can the dilemma between local adaptation and global integration be approached?  How are management functions applied in international business?

5 STUDENTS’ ASSESSMENT  1 Mid-Term: 24%  Class Participation: 24%  Group Project, or Case Study Presentation: 24%  Final Exam: 28%

6 MID-TERM:  Covers lectures, class discussions, handouts & videos.  May (or may not) include multiple choice, correct/fault, and brief explanations/definitions, in- depth analysis of case studies & theoretical issues, personal viewpoints etc. In Correct/Fault you have to provide the correct answer.  Students may fetch an A4 page handwritten (one side only) with notes as helping tool (photocopies are not accepted). The name of the student will be written at the top of the page. Page is for personal use only – cannot be passed around. The A4 sheet will be given to me together with the exam paper.

7 FINAL EXAM:  Covers only topics after the mid-term (lectures, class discussions, handouts & videos).  May (or may not) include multiple choice, correct/fault, and brief explanations/definitions, in- depth analysis of case studies & theoretical issues, personal viewpoints etc. In Correct/Fault you have to provide the correct answer.  Students may fetch an A4 page handwritten (one side only) with notes as helping tool (photocopies are not accepted). 8 CASE STUDY PRESENTATIONS  4 different Cases Studies will be presented in respective classes.  Case Study presentations are valuable for integrating theory.  Time for presentation: Approx.30 min (20P+10D). Case Study presentations start by the end of the lesson.  In the exam days no presentation will be held.  Active discussion after presentation is expected.  About 30 slides are suggested. No written text is required – just the PPT (to be delivered to me by email by the presentation date).

9 GROUP PROJECT PRESENTATIONS  Presentations will be made in PPT.  All presentations will take place the same day before the final exam.  Time for each presentation: Approx. 30 min (20P + 10D)  PPT of all presentations of group projects will be sent to me through e-mail till Tuesday 9/4  The written assignment will be delivered by email till Monday 22/4

10 GROUP PROJECT  Subject: Strategic analysis of a Greek MNC through the application of Porter’s 5 Forces, SWOT Analysis, and identification of sources of competitive advantage. Students’ suggestions may also be accepted – with my modifications. Additional topics: - Strategic failure and closure of Eastman Kodak. - Failure of the acquisition of Rover by BMW. - Strategic analysis of the Tablet PC market. - Strategic analysis of shipping. - Strategic analysis of Twitter. - Strategic analysis of Facebook. - DT strategic analysis, emphasizing on mergers & acquisitions. - Merger of General Motors with Peugeot & Citroen.  Research projects will be conducted according to the U.K. Research Ethics Committee policies. Will be checked for academic fairness.  Assigned to groups of 2–3 persons.

11 GROUP PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS  About 12-15 pages (except the Appendices), Times New Roman, 11 dpi, double space, normal margins.  No theoretical part is required.  Abstract: 6-7 sentences.  Introduction: About 1 full page.  Discussion & Conclusions: Comparison of theory and findings is recommended when appropriate (about 2-3 pages).  Citations: Contain author’s name, date, and page, in brackets: (Paulson 2009: 134-135).  Bibliography: Only cited sources are included. Besides internet links, must contain at least 5 hard sources (books or articles). Format examples: Schloss S. (1984) “Access to Capital”, Venture, Vol. 15 (2), 34-52. Smith H.P. (2007) Management Today. London: Routledge.

12 CLASS PARTICIPATION: Involves:  Participation in class discussions  In-class presentations  Interest expressed through thorough attendance  Chatting in class is forbidden. Each student will be warned twice. A third warning entails a cut of the student’s class participation degree by half, i.e. more than 12 pts. Breaks:  Please be punctual in breaks !

14 Notes on Class Participation  Effective learning depends a lot on class participation, through sharing knowledge and experience.  Woody Allen said that “90% of success is just showing-up”, and this is partially true. Participation in class discussions is highly valued.  Statements must be meaningful, answers to my questions have to be thoughtful, and building upon important contributions of classmates will be appreciated.  Chatting in class is forbidden. Each student will be warned twice. A third warning entails a cut of the student’s class participation degree by half, i.e. more than 12 pts.

15 Analysis of Case Studies  THE SETTING  Ice breaker  Issues and outlook: What is the problem?  Which information is most relevant (classification according to importance)?  Identification of key issues  ANALYSIS  What does your analysis reveal?  How is the firm impacted?  Which are the implications?  PROPOSALS  Which are the alternative solutions?  Which are the decision criteria?  Which is the most promising solution?  What is the plan for action & implementation ? Timing?  What is overall impact and evaluation of the plan?

16 Analysis of Case Studies (cont)  SETTING EVERYTHING TOGETHER Setting down key assumptions Linkage with theory Logical synthesis of discussion points Identification of alternatives Elaboration of a meaningful strategy Synthesis of key points Creative summary  If the case material seems inadequate or outdated, feel free to search for additional data  MBAs (solve problems) vs. PMs (describe problems)!
