7. Word Study Program To learn spelling patterns not just memorize words for a quiz. This is accomplished through playing with words, completing word sorts in various manners, practice, problem solving, making connections

8. What is a word sort? Write sort: students write their spelling words into given categories ABC Sort: Students alphabetize spelling words. No Peeking Sort: Wednesday night practice quiz at home with family member. Write it Out!!! Paste Sort

9. Independent Reading Program Purpose –The more you read the better you read. Reading improves when given lots of practice at appropriate levels. –AR program monitors students basic comprehension on just right books. –Third grade standard practice: 5 points per 1 st quarter, 8 points 2 nd quarter, 10 points 3 rd quarter, 12 points 4 th quarter

10. A.R. Program Be careful in presentation of program to our children. It is an option for locating books of interest and appropriate reading level. Levels start low to make sure that it is truly an Independent reading level Motivational rewards are based on a child to child and class to class basis.

11. Fairness Not that everyone gets the same thing. Everyone gets what they need! A truly differentiated Classroom environment

Writer’s Workshop Approximately 4 days a week students will get to immerse themselves in self expression Mini lessons will include: Gathering story ideas Narrative writing Technical Writing Taking Journal ideas and generating them into full blown stories or articles Most Important: We all have something to say!

13. What Common Core Means to Current Third Graders Greater emphasis on nonfiction reading. Reading and Writing take equal emphasis in classroom. Technology and research take bigger part in classroom experiences.

14. Social Studies Units of Study Focus on local community Local History and Settlers Maps and Map reading Government International Research Project

15. Flat Stanley To learn about different communities and how they are similar and diverse –Students will send off a Flat Stanley or Suzi to friends and relatives around the world, asking for information and photos. –Students will create posters of what they learn.

16. International Festival Students will research at school a country. Students will write a brief report and create a poster illustrating what they have learned about their country Students will have a festival in March to share what they have learned with their peers and parents. Home responsibilities will be to gather research material, create a food from their country to share.
