Recap Torah: – Most sacred text of Judaism. – Records events and laws important to the Israelites. God took part in their History. Makes up first 5 books of the Jewish Bible. – Genesis. – Exodus. – Leviticus. – Numbers. – Deuteronomy.

The Beliefs of Judaism Believed that God is present everywhere. God knows everything and has complete power. God promised Abraham that his people would become Kings and build nations. Covenant: – Binding agreement. Moses: – An Israelite leader who the Torah credits with leading the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan. “The Promise Land”

The Ten Commandments The heart of Judaism. Believed that God delivered the Commandments to them through Moses. Set out religious duties toward God. Others are rules for correct behavior.

Judaism and Women Some laws protected Women. 10 Commandments said: – Mothers should be treated with respect. Had different duties than the Men. Judge Deborah: – Won honor and respect as religious leader.

Justice and Morality Prophets: – Religious teachers who are regarded as the speakers for God. They told the Israelites how God wanted them to live. Preached a code of ethics, or moral behavior.

Checking for Understanding What did the Prophets tell the Israelites? The prophets preached a code of ethics that told the Israelites how God wanted them to live.

The Effects of Judaism Diaspora: – Scattering of a group of people. Wherever they settled they preserved their heritage. Lived in close communities. Passover: – Celebration of the Israelite's freedom from slavery and their departure, or Exodus, from Egypt. Judaism had an important influence on two later religions. – Christianity. – Islam.

Checking for Understanding How did the Jews preserve their Heritage? By living together in close communities; obeying their religious laws; worshipping at their synagogues; following traditions.
