Why Do We Need Safety Rules? Safety is our first concern when doing science experiments in this class. Our experiments may require the use of certain chemicals, materials, and equipment that may harm us if not handled properly. It is important that we follow the safety rules at all times to avoid anyone getting hurt or damaging anything in our classroom. Remember: it is okay to have fun while we learn, as long as we are being safe
3
Materials and Chemical Safety When using a flame, make sure you are by it at all times The only time we smell chemicals is when the teacher says it is okay to do so Place the top back on a chemical as soon as you are done using it Follow the teacher’s directions when you have completed a lab before beginning clean up Any accidents, chemical spills, or injuries should be reported immediately to the teacher
4
Safety Procedures, Behaviors, and Precautions Always wear all protection equipment assigned by the teacher at all times such as: gloves, goggles, etc. Know where the safety equipment is located in the room Tie back long hair, wear fitting clothing, and shoes that cover your feet Eating, drinking, and chewing gum should be done outside of the lab Only do what your teacher tells you to do for the experiment. The only time doing something different is acceptable is if the teacher has approved it. All inappropriate and immature behaviors need to be left outside of the lab
5
Ethical Treatment of Living Organisms Only handle living things when instructed to do so Be gentle and respectful to the organisms Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards If gloves are supposed to be worn the entire time when dealing with a certain organism, they should be worn the entire time

Let’s Wrap it Up! The safety of you and your classmates is the number one concern when conducting science experiments. These requirements were made in order to keep us safe. Every time you do not follow one of them, you could be putting yourself and/or others in danger . Important points to remember are: Always follow teacher instructions Report all accidents immediately Always wear all safety equipment (even if you feel it is not needed) Dress appropriately for the experiment Have fun
