2. Background Verdiem’s “Surveyor” Software (formerly called “EZ Conserve”) –From the Verdiem Website: SURVEYOR works by intelligently placing PCs into lower power settings when not in use. The software employs a centralized control and management approach to controlling the power settings residing within each networked computer. This maximizes energy savings without interfering with end-user productivity or desktop maintenance. SURVEYOR features comprehensive reporting capabilities to quantify savings, is easy to implement, requires minimal maintenance, and delivers payback typically in 18 months or less. –Cost ~ $18/workstation –RTF Deemed Savings: 170 kWh –4-year measure life –BPA offers $17.00 credit per workstation, has seen very few claims so far.

New Competing Software Company: Faronics Software: Power Save From Faronics’ Website: –With the growing demand for customized power setting configurations, many firms are finding the power saving options included with their operating system to be mediocre at best. Faronics Power Save changes all this by providing system administrators with enterprise-wide control over advanced computer power configurations. With Power Save, computers can now be configured to shutdown, stand-by and hibernate based upon CPU usage, disk activity and application activity. The application activity feature is particularly useful if you would like a system to remain powered on whenever a certain application is running. Power Save even has the ability to generate detailed reports outlining enterprise-wide energy consumption levels and associated costs savings. Cost: $6 or $12/license plus a 20% yearly fee Question: Will Power Save save an “equivalent” amount of energy as Surveyor?

Proposed Specification 1.Workstation is defined as the computer monitor and the PC box. 2.The software shall have wake-on-LAN capability to allow networked workstations to be remotely wakened from or placed into any power-saving mode and to remotely boot or shut down ACPI-compliant workstations. 3.The software shall give the IT administrator easily-accessible central control over the power management settings of networked workstations that optionally overrides settings made by users. 4.The software shall be capable of applying specific power management policies to network groups, utilizing existing network grouping capabilities. 5.The software shall be compatible with multiple operating systems and hardware configurations on the same network. 6.The software shall monitor workstation keyboard, mouse, CPU and disk activity in determining workstation idleness.

7. Recommendation Deem Faronics’ Power Save software to have equivalent savings as the existing deemed savings. Future software equivalency will be determined based on the new specifications (not by a software comparison).
