Conventions 6 + 1 Writing Traits

What are conventions? Spelling Ensuring all words are spelled with the proper Canadian spelling Grammar Use of only one tense (past vs present.. Not both!) Ensuring that sentences flow well with the correct words Paragraphing Is it there? Does each paragraph discuss one main idea? Do all the paragraphs connect?! Punctuation and capitalization Use of periods, commas and other punctuation markings that are needed within a sentence Making sure all proper names (names of people, places, or products) are capitalized In short… it’s editing a piece of writing!

How do I edit my, or someone else’s, work? Show where changes need to be made by using specific markings Give suggestions for change Be specific Always remember that you are looking at someone’s work, so its important to be respectful Never actually change the work No work is perfect, so if you are struggling read the piece of writing aloud A dictionary should be close by to help with spelling

Continuum Level 1 Very few words are correctly spelt Many errors make it difficult to read the work Every or many lines need to be edited Level 2 Spell simple words correctly, but struggle with others Quite a few error need to be edited to help the reader understand me Level 3 I spell all simple words correctly, and some more difficult words are also correct Few punctuation, grammar, and capitalization errors Some editing needs to be done Level 4 Many, if not all words are spelt correctly Little to no errors within my work This is ready to be shared with my peers!

Task With an elbow partner work on the sheet labeled “What up?” Use the markings we discussed to edit the work Once complete, write a descriptive paragraph (that is 5-8 lines!!) about your favourite birthday gift Remember to appeal to the senses When complete have a peer edit your work
