3 Objectives To successfully demonstrate the uses of the Sunnyfield patient transfer & lifting belt. To provide an alternative safe and efficient patient transferring system. To reduce the incidence of muscoskeletal injuries among paramedics and patients.

4 Product Description The padded walking transfer belt is 10 cm wide and of varying lengths (30–52 in.). Three handles of varying orientation and size on each side. Quick release buckle so the belt can be fastened around the client. Safety keying mechanism. It is made from a high strength webbing material on the outside with a cotton liner on the inside and is padded for client comfort.

10 Cost / Benefit Analysis From 1994 to 1998, there were almost 36,000 claims in the health care industry, 1.5 million days were lost because of work-related injury and disease with claim costs totaling $155.3 million. Over the five-year period, claims costs increased by 37%. The most common accident type during this period was overexertion, comprising 55% of all health care industry claims. Of those overexertion claims, 38% were a result of patient handling.

11 Cost / Benefit Analysis cont’d The most common injury type, for the five-year- period was a strain, with 73% of all injuries classified as a strain. Of those, 36% of the injuries were back strains and 37% were strains other than back. The injury rate for workers in the health care industry as a whole was 54% higher than the rate for all workers in British Columbia.
