One way to help is ask good questions and be good listeners. Help your children make sense of mathematics and build self confidence and encourage mathematical thinking and communication. None of the questions can be answered with “Yes” or “No”. Getting Started What do you need to find out? What do you know? How can you get the information? Where can you begin? What terms do you understand/not understand? What similar problems have you solved that would help? While Working How can you organize the information? Cooking Guessing the grocery, food bills etc. Estimating the materials for projects. (painting, wood working, new carpet) Sales prices at stores. (percent, or fraction off) Tracking prices of products at the same store compared to other similar stores. (Example: Cub vs. Target vs. Rainbow) Recording times and distance for trips or sports activities. Figuring out gas mileage or cost to go on a trip. Helping your parent budget. (Electric bill, gas bill, phone bill, etc) Keeping track of how much you recycling. (Making a graph table, etc.) Investigate a life style habit by charting the amount you do it.
