When do we use it ???? Using capital letters is relatively simple. But there are a lot of rules that have to be followed when using capitalization. The following slides advice us on which contexts we must use capital letters. Good reading and don’t forget to do the exercises at the end of the slide show. You must practice capitalization in order to master it.

UseExamples The personal pronoun “I “ is always capitalized Last week, I went to visit my cousin. I will never forget that special day. The first letter of the days of the week and months It happened last June She went there on Saturday The first letter of the planets except for earth, the moon and the sun We did a research on Jupiter and the earth. The sun aligns with Mars The first letter of the continents, countries, states, provinces and cities She lives in Alaska. They come from Calgary He went to Jamaica The first letter of nationalities and languages or derived from a proper noun He is a Canadian citizen She studied in Spain This German was a Nazi.

USEEXAMPLES The first letter of North, South, East and West when designating a geographic region. But not when indicating a direction There is unrest in the Middle East. She loves to vacation in South America. The wind blows from the west. He came from the north. The first letter of titles or professions when followed by a proper noun This is Uncle Richard. Doctor Jones was nice to me. I present you Lady Diana. The first letter in a abbreviation of a title if it is followed by a proper noun Dr. Jones told Mrs. White about Mr. White’s cancer. Our teacher is Miss. Philips. The first letter of holidays, official and/or civic holidays I can’t wait till Christmas. The next holiday is Labor Day. The funniest one is Halloween.

Where can I find Swanson University. The first letter historical periods or events The Second World War. This was a Romantic Period. The first letter of words forming titles of books, painting, movies, etc. except for the articles, conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or less. The title of this movie was the Sixth Sense. I loved this book entitled Domination. The Mona Lisa is exquisite. The first letter of a sentence, following a colon (:) or a dash (-) She recently moved. The Rockies: An incredible journey.

Perfect practice makes perfect In order to practice capitalization, you must find and rewrite all the capital letters in each text. Come back on the different notions if necessary in this power point slide show. You must print the pdf file and do it by hand. Bring it to class so we can look at it together.
