Project Quality Management The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) Fifth Edition, Chapter 8 Project Quality Management Knowledge Area – Plan Quality Management (Planning Process) – Perform Quality Assurance (Executing Process) – Control Quality (Monitoring and Controlling Process) 2
3
The Quality Activity Matrix falls within the Perform Quality Assurance Project Quality Management: – Plan Quality Management – Perform Quality Assurance – Control Quality 3
4
Types of Organization Structures The Quality Activity Matrix is mostly used in a “Strong Matrix Organization” Reference Figure 2-4, page 24, for Strong Matrix Organization in PMBOK® – Has a full time Project Manager with considerable authority and full-time project administrative staff. – Project staff is matrix from other functional areas It will also works with the other types of matrix organization structures (weak, balance, and projectized and composite). 4
5
Quality Activity Matrix What is it? – It is an At-A-Glance tool – It is a discussion point between the project manager and the quality manager or the project lead and the quality engineer. – It is a baseline of minimum quality activities. 5
6
Quality Activity Matrix Why do we need it? – It helps communicate the Quality Activities to Project Managers and other project personnel and stakeholders. – It ensures that quality activities are on the Project Schedule. – It helps to justify resources with top management and stakeholders. 6
7
Quality Activity Matrix Who uses it? – Project Managers – Project Personnel – Quality Managers – Quality Engineers – Stakeholders 7
8
How is it created? What does it look like? For today’s example, I will use a generic Quality Activities Matrix. It can be use for any quality activities on any type of project. 8
9
First Step Determine the type of quality activities that will be performed using key terms: 9
10
First Step Determine the type of activities using key terms: Participate – Defined: To be a contributing member with defined roles and responsibilities – Example: participate as a member of the configuration control board, material review board, milestone reviews, etc. 10
11
First Step Determine the type of activities using key terms: Assess – Defined: to evaluate processes or products and provide assessment results and recommendations. – Example: Assess project documents such as, System Concept, Software Specifications, preliminary and critical design, configuration management plans, test readiness, etc… 11
12
First Step Determine the type of activities using key terms: Perform – Defined: to lead or conduct a prescribed activity – Example: perform project quality audits 12
13
First Step Determine the type of activities using key terms: Review – Defined: to extract for informational purposes and use as potential input into activity planning – Example: Review project plan, measurements, action items, lessons learned, etc… 13
14
First Step Determine the type of activities using key terms: Develop – Defined: create or author project documents – Example: Quality Manual, Quality Assurance Plan, Surveillance Plan, Quality Statement of Work, Quality Assurance Requirements, Corrective Actions, Process Improvements, etc… 14
15
First Step Determine the type of activities using key terms: Capture – Defined: Record – Example:, Measurements, action items, meeting minutes, Lessons Learned, etc… 15
16
First Step First step is completed once you have determine the type of quality activities using key terms for your organization: Participate Perform Assess Review Develop Capture 16
17
Second Step What Life Cycle will you use: -Project Life Cycle; System Engineering Life Cycle; Software Engineering Life Cycle, etc…. 17
18
Third Step What project activities: -Project Reviews, Deliverables, Configuration Management, Defect Tracking, Corrective Actions, Risk Management, Verification, Validation, etc… 18
19
Third Step Quality Project Activities may be driven by: – Quality standards: ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 20000, TL 9000, ISO 27000, etc… – Hardware and Software Standards: Industry (DoD and Aerospace) standards, IEEE standards, Workmanship standards, Coding Standards – Models and other Methodologies: CMMI, Agile, etc… 19
