FROM MRS BALL MS GRAINGER AND MRS KEANE Welcome to Year One
2
Settling In All children appear happy and settled in their new classrooms. In Year One, children build upon and extend the learning experiences gained from their Reception class. Although a more structured and formal learning environment is provided, young learners will also continue to develop their skills and understanding through play.

6

7
Dinner Time School dinners are available (free) Menus can be found by using a link on schools web site Please speak to the School Office if you would like your child to change from a packed lunch, to a school dinner.
8
Reading Please read with your child for at least 10 minutes each night and sign your child’s planner to show you have read with them. We will invite you into school in the near future to see your child in a Guided Reading lesson and a Phonics lesson as we hope this will give you more of an insight into how your child will learn to read at school.
9
Reading Year One children learn to have a phonetic approach to their reading through daily phonic lessons. Children learn sounds made by a letter or letters before blending the sounds together (from left to right) to read a word. Guided Reading sessions help develop fluent reading, aid comprehension skills and enable children to read for enjoyment. Children may select a book to take home from our well resourced School Library, provided they have a book bag to protect the book from damage
10
PE Mrs Keane’s class have PE lessons on Wednesday and Friday up to October half term. After October half term PE will be delivered on Tuesday and Friday. Mrs Ball and Ms Grainger’s class have PE on Wednesday and Friday up to October half term. As staff do not remove ear rings, please could children come to school without ear rings on these days. Both indoor and outdoor PE kits should be kept in school as we may use your child’s PE kit as a change of clothes, should an accident occur.
11
Learning As well as being invited in to school to see Guided Reading and Phonics lessons, we will invite you to a Computing and Maths lesson in the near future.
12
Learning Challenges Learning Challenges are used to link the teaching and learning of all subjects as well as provide an exciting, engaging and interesting curriculum. Year One children will be presented with the Learning Challenges: Is Stockport Better Than Anywhere Else In The World? Which Plants Would Little Red Riding Hood Find In Reddish Vale? Why Do Christians Celebrate Christmas? Why Are Tigers Different Than Humans? Are Our iPads Better Than Our Grandparent's Toys? Who Was L S Lowry?
13
Expectations We will hold two Parents Evenings throughout the year as well as send home written reports in July. Please refer to the leaflet which shows what is expected of a Year One Child as this explains what your child is expected to have learned by the end of Year One. Should you wish to discuss your child’s progress, please call in at the end of a school day or arrange a more formal appointment through the school office.
14
Magic Moments As a way of you sharing achievements made by your child at home, in Year One we have Magic Moments (WOW times in Reception). Please complete a Magic Moment slip whenever you feel it is appropriate and send it in to school so we can all celebrate your child’s success with them.
15
Planners To help improve links between home and school, please use the planners to record any notes you would like to send into school. Staff will sometimes enter notes to parents/carers by using the planners. The first few pages in planners allow consent to be given for many different things. It would be of great help if you could sign the first few pages of your child’s planner.
16
Information The school web site can offer information and explain things in detail. It is worth viewing the class pages as photograph and videos of your child may be shown.
17
Questions Please feel free to raise any queries you have.
18
Thanks Thank you for your co operation. We look forward to working with you and your children. Please encourage your child to complete the Welcome To Year One booklet with you, before returning it to school. This is a great opportunity for staff and children to get to know each other.
