Industrial Revolution How did this new technology changed how some people lived. Compare how much clothing owned before the Industrial Revolution to how much clothing people own today. Identify one positive and one negative effect of the industrial revolution.

Living Conditions: – Sickness widespread- epidemics (cholera) urban slums-city lifespan 17yrs – Wealthy merchants & Factory owners-live suburban – Cities lack sanitary and building codes – Not enough housing/police/educa tion

Working Conditions Average work day 14 hrs/6 days a week Dirty poor lit factories injure workers Many coal miners killed by coal dust

Middle Class Skilled workers/merchants/rich farmers/professionals Middle class looked down on by landowners & aristocrats Middle class=comfy living

Working Class Laborers’ lives not improved & some are replaced by machines Luddits & others destroy machines that put them out of work Unemployment rise= RIOTS!

Immediate Benefits Creates jobs/enriches nation/encourages technology education expands/clothing cheaper/diet & housing improve Workers eventually win shorter hours/ better wages & conditions

Mills of Manchester Manchester has labor/water power/nearby port at Liverpool Poor live & work in unhealthy & dangerous environment Business owners risk own $ in factories

Children In Manchester Factories: Children as young as 6 work in factories & many injured 1819 Factory Act restrict working age & hours Factory pollution fouls the air & poison rivers Consumer goods & $$$ Factories changed how people work & live work
