It is a modern style, originally called 'Jazz Modern’.

The genius of the artist is evidenced by an enormous body of work that is considered among the most influential and unique of the 20th century. Erté—Romain de Tirtoff— was born in Russia in 1892, and died at age 97 in 1990.

30 As the force of the 1920’s depression also reached all walks of life, posters became a costly but well known prestige item which drew attention to a product. Many well known artists were not making money selling their work, so they turned to creating posters for companies during these lean financial times, thus reaching a wider audience because of their notoriety. This is a first form of celebrity endorsements. As a means of working through the depression, many designers mastered the technique of presenting a sales message with an immediate urgency. New designs featuring repetition of a theme or a slogan became very profitable and useful. It was during the depression that ingenuity gave birth to the modern commercial artists and ad agencies as we know them today. IMPORTANT TO KNOW...
