4 Interpreter Dress Code Interpreters should wear professional clothing that is easy to contrast with the color of their skin and not confusing to the eyes. No patterns, or bright colors. Solid/neutral colors

5 When Utilizing an Interpreters The interpreter is invisible. Talk directly to the Deaf person. Never talk to the interpreter. –Example: “Can you tell them I study ASL”

6 Thomas Gallaudet 1787-1851 –Inspired by neighbor’s Deaf daughter Alice Cogswell to learn how to educated Deaf people in America. –Traveled to France where he met Laurent Clerc and convinced him to come back to America. –Set up the first school for the Deaf in America in 1817 American School for the Deaf in Hartford Connecticut.

7 Laurent Clerc 1785-1869 –Born hearing became deaf as a toddler. –Met Gallaudet in France. –First Deaf teacher in America –Helped develop American Sign Language –Founded American School for the Deaf in 1817.

8 Matt Hamill American Mixed Martial Artist and wrestler. Nicknamed “The Hammer” First ever Deaf person to win an NCAA division championship (won 3 times). Deaf actor Russell Harvard played him in the movie “The Hammer”
