Nominative Case Nominative Case = Subject The subject performs the action of the verb. I buy a CD. Who or what is buying?

Accusative Case Accusative Case = Direct Object The direct object receives the action of the verb; it is whats being verbed. I buy a CD. Who or what is being bought?

Word changes in English In English, some words change depending on whether or not they are the subject/nominative case or the object/accusative case. Examples:he vs. him I vs. me she vs. her

Definite Articles in Accusative Case Nominative Accusative derdendiedas die (pl.)die All der-words follow the same pattern: definite articles, dies-, welch-, etc.

Indefinite Articles in Accusative Case Nominative Accusative mein (m)meinenmeinemein meine (pl.)meine All ein-words follow the same pattern: ein, kein, possessive adjectives

Prepositions Some prepositions require the accusative case. Any object that follows one of these prepositions must be in accusative case: durch-throughfuer-for gegen-againstohne-without um-around Er kauft das Geschenk fuer mich.
