5 Educational psychology studies how humans learn within educational settings by examining the effectiveness of various educational interventions, the psychology of teaching, and the social aspect of schools. School psychology applies the principles of both educational psychology and clinical psychology to treat children with learning and/or behavior problems. The goals of educational psychology are to understand and treat children with learning disabilities; to foster the intellectual growth of gifted and talented children; to teach pro-social behaviors; and to promote safe, effective, and supportive learning environments. Both Jean Piaget's theory of development and Lawrence Kohlberg's stage theory of moral development are influential in educational psychology by examining how children progress through learning stages as they age. Educational psychology dates back to the early 20th century, where it branched out from functional psychology. Lightner Witmer is considered the founder of school psychology, and Arnold Gesell is noted as being the first official school psychologist. 6 Two laws, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504, provide guidance to educators in order to provide appropriate and equal education to students with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides federal funding to states to be put towards the educational needs of disabled children. Its two main components include Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) and the Individual Education Program (IEP). An IEP is a specialized plan that is designed with specific goals to meet the needs of each student in the special education department. Section 504 is a civil rights law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination, even if they are not provided for by the IDEA. Section 504 states that schools must ensure a student with a disability is educated among peers without disabilities. Common types of learning disabilities include intellectual disabilities, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, deaf-blindness, developmental delay, orthopedic impairment, speech or language impairment, and traumatic brain injury.
