Thesis Development Paragraph 1 - Introduction Paragraph 2 – Strong argument Paragraph 3 – Weakest argument Paragraph 4 – Strong argument Paragraph 5 - Conclusion

Introduction Hook or attention-getting lead: Begin with... an interesting fact. a 2-3 sentence anecdote. a memorable, thoughtful quotation. a rhetorical question.

Interesting Fact Nearly 28 million people in the United States play golf (golflink.com), and according to the Huffington Post nearly 20 million people in the United States practice yoga. I am one of these millions. Golf and yoga contribute to my health, social life, and mindfulness. At first glance, it may seem these are two completely different activities, and in many ways they are different, but they both contribute to my life by teaching me a philosophy of living my daily life. Although golf and yoga are healthy activities I enjoy, they both actually provide me with a philosophy for living daily life.

2 – 3 sentence anecdote “Mrs. Endres, how do you stay so calm?” one of my students asked me on day. In the moment, I couldn’t really think of an answer, but as I thought about it later, I realized playing golf and practicing yoga have helped me learn to be a calmer person. In my life these two activities contribute to my health, social life, and mindfulness. At first glance, it may seem these are two completely different activities, but they both contribute to my life by teaching me a philosophy of living my daily life. Although golf and yoga are healthy activities I enjoy, they both actually provide me with a philosophy for living daily life.

Question What could be more different than playing a round of golf on a sunny day and practicing yoga in a quiet, dark room? Many people may think these two activities have nothing in common. In my life, however, these two activities contribute to my health, social life, and mindfulness. At first glance, it may seem these are two completely different activities, and in many ways they are different, but they both contribute to my life by teaching me a philosophy of living my daily life. Although golf and yoga are healthy activities I enjoy, they both actually provide me with a philosophy for living daily life.

Quotation “You cannot always control what goes on outside. But you can always control what goes on inside.” This quotation, found on the website 101 Yoga Quotations, could apply to two of my favorite activities, golf and yoga. These two activities contribute to my health, social life, and mindfulness. At first glance, it may seem these are two completely different activities, and in many ways they are different, but they both contribute to my life by teaching me a philosophy of living my daily life. Although golf and yoga are healthy activities, they both actually provide me with a philosophy for living daily life.

Lead/Hook (Interesting Fact) Video games are big business and are a mainstay in American culture and entertainment. It’s estimated that “the average boy spends about 13 hours a week playing video games” (Worthy). Furthermore, in 2012 video game sales were more than 60 billion dollars (Kain).

Bridge statement/background With our young people spending a large amount of time and money on video games, it’s time to examine the effect violent video games have on its players, teenagers in particular. Many games, such as “Call of Duty” and “Grand Theft Auto,” contain extreme violence and many of our young people spend more time interacting with these violent images than they do reading a book or socializing with friends. Can teenagers be saturated in these violent interactions without it having an effect on their psyche?

Counterargument & Refutation Many people will argue that those who play video games can separate the games from reality and that the games are simply a form of entertainment, much like television or movies. However, when young people spend 12 or more hours a week interacting with violence, watching violent image, and making decisions about how to kill or torture within the virtual world, their brains are saturated in violence.

Thesis Statement Violent video games lead to more violence in people and society because the brain is physically affected by the exposure to violence, some criminals’ violent acts have been linked to video games, and the games themselves are becoming increasingly violent.
