Purpose  Part of the reason the Apollo missions were created was because of the Cold war, specifically the space race.  Being in this conflict with the Soviets gave us incentive to reach the moon and accomplish other major engineering goals before they did.

Purpose cont.  The idea for the Apollo program was thought of during the Eisenhower Administration.  It was put into action after John Kennedy’s speech promising to land on the moon before the end of the decade.

Importance  At the time the Apollo missions were important to America because it created a sense of pride for citizens.  Was like a competition of the different nations.  Landing on the moon would also provide us with new information.

Missions  Apollo 1- Was one of the worst catastrophes for the Apollo program killing 3 of the members in a fire.  Apollo 2 and 3 were for testing the upper atmosphere.  Apollo 4 was the 1 st unmanned flight of the Saturn V (which would later be used in the Apollo 11 mission).

Missions  Apollo 5 and 6 were both unmanned flight testing the Apollo Lunar Module and the Saturn V.  Apollo 7 was the First manned flight since the Apollo 1 fire.  Apollo 8 was the first mission to leave earth to the moon and return.  Apollo 9 tested aspects of the moon that would be essential for future missions.

Missions  Apollo 10 was a dry run for Apollo 11 which would be the first landing on the moon.  Apollo 11 landed the first humans on the moon. It was be a large victory for the U.S. in the space race.  Apollo missions 12-17 were all planned to land on the moon and all were successful except for 13 when a oxygen tank was ruptured.

Apollo 11  It was launched in July of 1969.  The crew was made up of 3 members Neil Armstrong, “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins.  Was monumental in U.S. history and fulfilled J.F.K.’s goal to reach the moon.

Cancellation  The last 3 missions (18, 19, and 20) were all cancelled.  When the cost were estimated it shocked congress and budgets were cut.  The main reason for the cancellation of the program was because of the lack of funds.
