2 Thorntree Primary School  390 pupils  Located in the East End of Glasgow  39% registered for school meals  Part of the Eastbank Learning Community  10% Children from Showmen families

3 In the beginning…  Supported study classes  Fairground topic visits  Fun Day event  HT and DHT invited to the Showman’s Guild Scottish Section Luncheon  Reconstruction of Interrupted Learner Service  Continuation of some Supported Study class

4 Why the project?  Project instead of after school classes  Allow children to tell their story for ‘us’  Curriculum for Excellence - Mapping, literacy, typing, research and photography  Cranhill Arts as partners  NPAF money

6 Our Learning Experience  Parents meeting to explain the project aims  Title chosen by the children ‘Travellers Around the World’  Parents explained Occupational Traveller/ Showman  Change of title ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’  Invite to showcase the photographs at the Showmen’s Guild Luncheon  Stirling Castle event to celebrate Showmen’s cultural heritage

7 Step Conference, Edinburgh ‘Listen Up –Travelling children and young people in Scottish Education’ 2011 Children enjoyed listening to the stories from Traveller and Gypsy children. The children took part in workshops showing their photographs and stories. They were very confident when talking about their way of life, their families and how they got on at school. Feedback from delegates was very positive.

11 Partnership working  Work folders when children are open  Interrupted Learner Service if required  Parents take stalls at the Christmas Fayre  Parents volunteer and donate prizes for school events  Fun Day  Sports Day  DHT available at the gate in the morning, Parents Nights, by phone, email etc  Letters and information also called in to some families, if Literacy is an issue.

13 What would you like to know? What is your favourite thing about being a showman? What is it like to move around a lot? Where do you enjoy being open most? What makes Showmen kids different? What do you do when you are open? What makes your school a good school for showmen kids? How long does it take you to build up and pull down? Is it difficult to come back to school when you have been travelling? What is different about living on a yard? What joints do you work in? What rides do you have? How do school sort out racism?
