#4 Independent Clauses: Expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a sentence. Ex: Genes contain the code for your physical appearance. Subordinate Clauses: Contains a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone. Ex: that determines your height Ex: because inherited traits often skip a generation
