Project Management and Product Development07 July, 2005 Product Development Time: –25% - value-adding necessary work Doing the right things correctly at the right time –10% - necessary work that didn’t add value Travelings, writing reports, etc... –30% - rework Fixing errors and redesigning products –25% - other activities than work Vacantions and waiting –10% - Unneeded work Attending meetings and writing reports that no one read Process based approach LOST TIME ( 35% )

Project Management and Product Development07 July, 2005 Lean Product Development Flow (LPDF) LPDF Value Definition 1.Mission Assurance/product quality (traditional goal of Systems Engineering); 2.Reduction of Program Cost and Schedule by a radical reduction of waste, and the associated reduction of daily frustrations of the PD team: 3.Process organized as a value-pulling workflow pulsed by takt Periods.

Project Management and Product Development07 July, 2005 Lean Product Development Flow (LPDF) Lean Principle 3 – MAKE THE WORK FLOW Steady progress of the VS through all Takt Periods, with maximum coordination and minimum waste. Takt Periods: Absolute, nonnegotiable common deadlines to robustly complete all period Tasks. Equal common deadlines: Discipline, coordination, identification and resolution of issues. Assure predictable flow of the VS and the program progress. Integrative events: Work results coordination and verification for consistency with the value proposition, and prepared for the next Takt period’s.

Project Management and Product Development07 July, 2005 Lean Product Development Flow (LPDF) Lean Principle 4 – PULL Promotion of “ doing the right work right ”; Tasks specified only if needed by a downstream process with work scope definition, consistent with the value definition; Critical guard against the waste of unneeded work and associated rework.

Project Management and Product Development07 July, 2005 Lean Product Development Flow (LPDF) Lean Principle 5 – PURSUIT OF PERFECTION A costly program must succeed on the first attempt; Pursuit of both perfect planning of LPDF, i.e, VSM and perfect first-time execution of the flow; LPDF sensitive to instabilities due to the fast flow of VS; Mitigating strategy and tactitcs: Program Leadership and Management; Training; management of Uncertainties and Unexpected Events.
