BELL Work (5 min.) 1.Make sure you are in your assigned seat. 2.Have signed syllabus (back page only) out to be collected. 3.Take out your spiral and complete the top of the first page table of contents as shown below: Table of Contents Date Assignment Pages 8/25 Intro to Science / critical thinking 4-5

2 Correctly set up interactive Science notebook. Solve a problem using critical thinking skills and relate this to real world science. Practice common classroom procedures such as materials use and cleanup.

4 Entering the Room  Enter the room and go directly to your assigned seat. Remain at seat unless the directions of our class activity require you to move.  Remove any materials needed for class from your backpack – paper, pencils/pens, notebook, etc.  Store backpacks under the lab tables in order to keep walkways clear.  Backpacks will not be placed on top of the tables; this is to prevent scratches and damage done to the lab table. They are brand new.  Work on the Bell work independently until time is up. BASIC CLASS PROCEDURES

5 Exiting the Room  At the end of the class period, you will be given permission to pack up and clean up.  Please put all materials back where they belong and clean up your area. “Leave a place better than you found it.”  When your table is dismissed, place your stool under your lab station and gather any trash.  Exit in an orderly manner.  Throw trash away on the way out.

6 Restroom/Drink  If you need to use the restroom or need a drink of water…  Please raise your hand to ask for permission  Avoid asking during new material, homework review, or testing.  Once given permission, have your planner ready for me to sign. (Remember to bring it back !)  * No more than 3 times per nine weeks*

7 Pencils/Trash Disposal  Sharpening Pencils  Use the small sharpeners in the table boxes.  If the sharpener is full, please ask permission to empty it.  Trash Disposal  Personal trash can be disposed of at end of class.  If our activity requires a lot of trash, we will use small trashcans at our tables.

9 Answer the question below under the IN section. Write using complete sentences.  Briefly describe a time when you solved a difficult problem. 3 minutes (Think & Write) 2 minutes (Pair) *Be ready to share out!

10 New Procedure  Scissors are in the tall bin at your table.  Pass bin around until everyone has a pair.  After we finish place them back in the bin without throwing or tossing them.  Use scissors according to directions of the activity.  Use the Black trash bins to dispose of any extra scraps.

11 Recreate the example model on your table following the 4 rules below: 1. You can only make 3 cuts (no more, no less) 2. You cannot cut out or tear off any part of the index card. 3. Think outside the box ! (in 3 dimensions) 4. If you mess up your card find another way to make the model. You only get one card. (you might want to practice on scrap paper first) Make sure to note what you have already tried. Can you solve the Index Card Mystery?… (10 min)

12 Questions to Think about and answer on p.5 in the “Through” section. (Complete sentences) 1. What specific steps did you take to try and solve this problem? (how did you approach it?) 2. How did you feel if you weren’t able to solve it? OR how did it feel if you did solve it? 3. How does this relate to the work Scientists do every day? *Be ready to share out!

13 Now, draw a line under the In section on page 4 and write “Out:” Out: Complete the 2 reflection questions: (5 minutes) 1. What did you learn from today’s activity about problem solving? 2. How does today’s activity relate to how we learn Science?
