-ed and –ing are called suffixes. A suffix is letters added to the end of a word. A suffix changes the word. Cat cats Play played Jump jumping

Some verbs and suffixes are easy. Play playing played Jump jumping jumped Walk walking walked Just add ed or ing!

When the verb has one syllable and ends with a short vowel and one consonant, you need to double the consonant. Hop hopping pat patted Dig digging clap clapped
