1 The Doubling Rule: Next Step 2 Syllable Words Remember The doubling rule is the one, one, one rule The word must be ONE syllable, end in ONE consonant and that consonant must have ONE vowel before it. If the answer to any of these things is “no” then you do not double. Write this down When you have a 2 syllable word and you want to know if you are suppose to double the end… 1.Split the word into its syllables 2.Decide which syllable has the accent (stress) 3.If it’s the LAST syllable that has the accent treat that syllable like it is one word and do the same one one one check. If it fits then double. 4.If the accent is on the first syllable then you do not double. 5.If the last syllable doesn’t fit the one, one, one check, then you don’t double.

2 Remember 1.Split into syllables 2.Which syllable has the accent (underline that syllable) 3.IF it’s the last syllable with the accent, try the one, one, one check. 4.If it fits, double. Remember: first syllable has the accent or the last syllable doesn’t get three checks then do not double. Copy these examples 1. omit + ing = O mit = omitting 2. compel + ing = Com pel = compelling 4. suffer + ed = Suf fer = suffered 5. number +ing = Num ber = numbering

3 Practice Copy all of these down, any you don’t finish are for homework. 1. admit + ance = 2. pilot + ing = 3. forgot + en = 4. Profit + able = 5. incur + ed = 6. unforget + able = 7. limit +ed 8. blunder + ing = 9. market + able = 10. disbar + ed =
