American Neutrality When war broke out, U.S. was determined to stay out. Public opinion was split – ethnic ties Government adopted official position of neutrality.

Effects of War 1. US Economy boomed. (WHY?) 2. Blockades put US and Germany at odds – Britain blockaded German ports and Germany then set up a blockade around GB with U-Boats.

The Lusitania Germany sunk the British passenger ship. – It contained 128 Americans This led to an agreement between US and Germany – Sussex Pledge- U-Boats would worn ships before they did anything to them. held off US involvement a bit longer

The Zimmermann Telegram Arthur Zimmermann (German Sec. of State) sent a telegram to Mexico asking for support. – They wanted Mexico to attack the US if they attacked Germany. – US found out about this and pushed them closer to war

Russian Revolution In March of 1917 the Russian rebellion overthrew Czar Nicholas from power The US was more likely to support the Allies now – Wilson did not believe in czarist rule of Russia

War is Declared Germany reissues unrestricted submarine warfare. – U-boats start sinking any ship that enters British waters, including US ships. Wilson has enough and declares war! – Congress overwhelmingly accepts. – April 2, 1917
