but the growth of industry has seriously damaged parts of the environment.
Efforts are being made to repair the damage

Acid rain is a mixture of chemicals and rain.
Damaging to buildings, crops, animals, pretty much everything
The Great Lakes are seriously affected by acid rain.
US and Canada are working together to improve air quality and prevent acid rain

Smog is a mixture of smoke and fog.
Dangerous to breathe for all life
Caused primarily by car exhaust
States require emissions tests
Engineers research alternatives
Industrial waste often drains into water supplies and sources.
This pollutes water, kills animals, and makes people sick.
Fertilizers and pesticide runoff can pollute water too

20. Pollution Back from the Brink:
Water in the Great Lakes region became so polluted that the Cuyahoga River in Ohio actually caught fire several times in the 1970s.
Clean up efforts are returning the lakes and rivers to their natural state
Automobiles are a major source of pollution, yet most people in this region continue to prefer automobile transportation over mass transit. Why might they do so, and how would you meet this challenge?
